Doctoral Workshop
After the success of last year, the 5th APMS Doctoral Workshop is planned at APMS 2012, offering PhD students the possibility to present and discuss, receive feedback, and exchange comments and views on their doctoral research in an inspiring academic community of fellow PhD students, experienced researchers and professors of the IFIP WG 5.7 community.
A specific award for the best paper submitted and presented at the Doctoral Workshop is planned, also with an economic award.
The participants of the Doctoral Workshop are PhD students that conduct research in the scientific field of the APMS 2012 conference. A number of participants will be selected to present their doctoral thesis research plans, also acting as peer reviewers. In addition to the presenters, other PhD students are invited to join the workshop as active listeners, discussants and learners.
The workshop will consist of presentations and discussions of the selected doctoral thesis research plans. For each presentation, altogether 35 minutes are reserved:
- 20 minutes for the oral presentation (Power Points can be used)
- 5 minutes for the peer review (Power Points can be used)
- 10 minutes for the discussants’ comments and general discussion.
Guidelines for the participants
Presenters. The maximum length of the research plan is 15 pages (using the Conference template), and the oral presentation should not exceed 20 minutes. The research plan is of course a working plan that still needs developments. However, it should address the following main points:
- Problem statement / Objective of the thesis
- Theoretical background and research gap
- Research questions
- Methodology and data
- Expected results and contribution to theory and practice
Peer-reviewers. Each presenter will act as peer reviewer of one other research plan. In the review, please consider the main points of the research plan (see above). Present the comments orally (5 minutes maximum), and give them in writing to the author at the workshop.
Presenters, peer-reviewers, scientific discussants. All research plans will be sent before the workshop by e-mail to all presenters, reviewers and scientific discussants. They read all the papers and note some main points per each paper, for general discussion. The peer reviewer concentrates in more detail on the research plan dedicated for him/her for review. The scientific discussants, i.e. professors and experienced researchers, will read all the research plans and prepare comments and supervisory input for the discussion.
All workshop participants. Presenters as well as non-presenters, peer-reviewers, professors and experienced researchers, all participate actively in the discussion.
Preparation and registration
All workshop participants (supervisors, presenters as well as non-presenters) have to register to the Doctoral Workshop. It is possible to register to the Doctoral Workshop in combination with the APMS 2012 conference registration. The fee for the Doctoral Workshop includes: workshop materials, workshop buffet on Saturday, workshop lunch on Sunday, and coffee/tea and refreshments. In the case where participants register to the Doctoral Workshop and to the APMS conference, fee for the Doctoral Workshop will be reduced.
